The importance of developing effective communication skills (Post #1)
Communication is an imperative process in which an individual engages to convey information of any kind to others. Depending on the need, the transmission of information may be verbal, or at other times, writings or nonverbal cues to may be used. Even a scent may carry a message. If we expect to convey a precise message, it is important that we possess effective communication skills. Unfortunately, such proficiency is not easily achieved.
Though having been communicating with others since infancy, the process of transmitting information accurately still poses a challenge to me. It is a complex process which can result in erroneous situations such as immense confusion, wasted effort and missed opportunity. Only by the conveying of the exact message would communication be an effective and fruitful process. To achieve a clear and concise delivery of thought, efforts are required from both the sender and the receiver.
Effective communication is essential in every sphere of life, be it personal or professional. In any industry, employers seek workers with effective communication skills. In academic institutions, effective communication skills play a vital role in the conveying of ideas within a classroom. In social life, effective communication skills are the key to successful interpersonal relationships. In effect, the importance of communication skills has spread through the society not as an overt requirement, but a covert necessity.
These said, how can one develop the right effective communication skills to be an effective communicator in this interactive biosphere? Though I am not equipped to provide a comprehensive answer at this point in time, I hope to be able to do so when this module concludes.
Personally, communication can be perceived as an art. Mastery of this art requires much understanding, practice and ultimately the development of effective communication skills which can prove to be an invaluable asset. Whether in work or dealings with personal life, the importance of effective communications skills cannot be underestimated.

Hi Bryan! I agree that mastering of effective communication requires much practice and that effective communication takes two hands to clap! Also, it is indeed true that effective communication is essential in all aspects of our life hence it is definitely a skill worth mastering in order to reduce any misunderstandings as well as to get work done efficiently. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect!
Hi Bryan,
Slick blog you have here!
Indeed, effective communication should not be underestimated and its proficiency not easily achieved. By the way, I like the cartoon. It's not just one apple but many. Anyway, seeing the cartoon, something came to mind. So fruit(haha!) for thought for those reading this comment: Even if one were to possess effective communication skills, the receiver has to be a good listener too yup? If not, things will be messed up again. So it takes two hands to clap. So then will the communication skills honed be wasted?
Regards,
Mario
Bryan!
Reading about your blog revived a controversial sentiment i chucked in a dark corner at the back of my mind when i was little;humans are complicated creatures. While Nature seeks to create logic in simplicity, humans talk a walk back; we thrive on complexity. I remember Ryan saying babies, with their lack of linguistic abilities, take only a yawn, giggle, or consistant wailing to make known their intent. As we mature, people get more insidious, get over-sensitive, thwart words, disguise their intent in multitudes of ways, making communication with each other a complex mind game. From the second we need to make a message known to another individual, we have to decide how to craft the words in a way the recipient will not get offended, sounds comfortable to the ears, and people often end up masquerading as someone who they didn't set out to be, unable to differentiate themselve from the facade they created.
With respect to your last paragraph, i believe if one refuses to acknowledge the importance of effective communication and neglect the necessity to practise it, this individual might not be self-centered,but merely believe in presenting a truthful self to others. In doing so, the backlashes culminates into an ostracism, leaving him bewildered. My question: have you ever wondered how much you have changed to accomadate others? It's a necessity, but is it healthy? Apparently as interaction is inevitable, the choice lies not therein whether or not to change, but the extent of doing so whilst remaining sincere.
Mind-boggling post of yours!
Hi Bryan,
I think your post covers many specific areas very well. The points you mentioned made me understand how professional communication might be useful to you, instead of just as a general mention. Well done on that.
You mentioned something else about communication being seen as a form of art, which gave me a new and interesting perspective of what I percieved communication to be. I understood communication to be important in every aspect of our lives, but I never saw it as an art until you intrigued me with this point.
This is overall an excellent post which covers many aspects of how communication is essential while answering the question still. The post is also gives us readers a respectable tone with a proper balance of formality.

Hi Bryan,
I do agree with you that communication skills are kind of arts. One can easily annoy or please someone depending on how he communicate with others. You also mentioned various aspects where good communication skills have significant influence on, which functions as concrete evidences showing the importance of communication skills. Surely it requires continuous practices and efforts to become a good communicators, but as you have mentioned, it is worthwhile.

Zaizhi
